Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon



October 2019





JCBC's Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon was held at Solare's Restaurant and was a big success. Congratulations to ALL of our volunteers and supporters who were recognized at JCBC's Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. Thanks to all who were able to come---and to our volunteers who couldn't be there!

Thank you Girl Scout Troop 2208



December 2017





Thank you to the girls and leaders of Girl Scout Troop 2208 who made and painted a beautiful bookshelf and stocked it full of over 400 books for babies and toddlers for the girls at Girls Rehabilitation Facility (GRF) to read to their children and younger siblings during visits. The children will also be able to take a new book home with them. Thanks also to San Diego Council on Literacy for the $500 grant for baby books for this project.

JCBC 20th Anniversary Celebration



October 2016





20th Anniversary Luncheon at Solare's Restaurant was a big success. The event celebrated twenty years of providing literacy services to incarcerated youth in San Diego County. JCBC's board of directors, volunteers, supporters and friends enjoyed delicious Italian cuisine, musical entertainment by Fabio Rojas and friend, wonderful door prizes and great conversation and company. Representatives of San Diego Office of Education and San Diego County Probation Department also attended.


President Jennifer Lawson welcomed the guests and along with Past President Barbara Gross handled the drawings of door prizes. Jennifer Scott and Maria Arroyo helped plan the event. Thanks to all who attended and to the law firms who generously contributed to the event.

Greater San Diego Reading Association Event



April 2016





President Jennifer Lawson, along with Board members Tomas Gayton and Barbara Gross, attended the 37th Annual Award Brunch put on by the Greater San Diego Reading Association on April 23rd. JCBC received an award for its efforts to promote literacy.


Upon accepting the award, Jennifer asked the crowd (mostly teachers) to go out of their way to ensure that previously-detained teenagers feel welcome once they return to their regular classrooms. JCBC is grateful to GSDRA for recoginizing its efforts to encourage students attending Court schools to read.

Paint-n-Vineyard Fundrasier A Success



September 2015





Thanks to all who attended and helped make the PaintnVineyard Fundrasier a big success! Over 30 talented artists enjoyed wine and other tasty refreshments while creating a beautiful painting of San Diego Bay and the Coronado bridge. In addtion to all of the fun-raising, JCBC raised funds to buy 5 months of books for 20 students!


Special thanks to Dentons, the law firm of new board member Crystal Culhane, who sponsored the event.

In October 2014 Dr. Richard Lederer, author of Monsters Unchained, spoke to the girls in Unit 70 Juvenile Hall, the boys in Unit 800 Juvenile Hall, and at the Girls Rehabilitation Facility. Here's a photo of the prolific author with a display of some of his books.

Visit with zoe



March 2014





On March 3 and 10, 2014, author came to Juvenile Hall to discuss her book “The Moon Daughter” with the girls. The students asked a ton of questions and we all learned a lot about the process of writing a book. Thank you, Zoe, for the time you spent with us.



Books and chocolate event



November 2013





JCBC held an amazingly successful fundraiser on November 2, 2013! Donations are still coming in, but we met our goal of raising $5,000. We thank Robert and Daryl Allen for their gracious hospitality in hosting the event. Thank you also to our talented and generous speaker, Dr. Richard Lederer.
